The car that rocks the cradle.
A prototype cradle for Ford that replays a car ride so a baby falls asleep: the motion, the engine sound and the streetlights passing by. We built the iOS app that records the trip and drives the cradle, and the server behind it.
The cradle is a one-off piece with a tilting base, a speaker and an LED strip, moved by Dynamixel motors and a Raspberry Pi running Python, while a Django server carries each recorded trip from the phone to the cradle. The campaign took seven awards in 2017: a Gold Cyber Lion and a Mobile Bronze at Cannes Lions, and five at El Ojo de Iberoamérica, among them Gold in Innovation and Gold in Mobile.
Record
Parents record a real drive with the iOS app: the motion, the engine and the pattern of the streetlights.
Send
The trip reaches the cradle through a Django server.
Rock
Dynamixel motors, driven by a Raspberry Pi, tilt the base to the motion of the road.
Sleep
The speaker plays the engine, the LED strip the passing lights, and the baby falls asleep.
